ప్రముఖ హీరో శ్రీరామ్, ఖుషీ రవి జంటగా నటించిన చిత్రం ‘పిండం’. ‘ది స్కేరియస్ట్ ఫిల్మ్’ అనేది ఉప శీర్షిక. ఈ సినిమాతో సాయికిరణ్ దైదా దర్శకుడిగా పరిచయం అవుతున్నారు. కళాహి మీడియా బ్యానర్‌పై యశ్వంత్ దగ్గుమాటి ఈ చిత్రాన్ని నిర్మించారు. ఈ సినిమా డిసెంబర్ 15వ తేదీన ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా భారీగా విడుదల కానుంది. ఈ నేపథ్యంలో మంగళవారం నాడు విలేఖర్లతో ముచ్చటించిన కథానాయకుడు శ్రీరామ్ చిత్ర విశేషాలను పంచుకున్నారు.

ఒకరికొకరు సినిమా వచ్చి 20 ఏళ్ళు అవుతున్నా ఇప్పటికీ అలాగే ఉన్నారు. మీ ఆరోగ్య రహస్యం ఏంటి?

ఆహారం విషయంలో శ్రద్ధ తీసుకుంటాను. ఎక్కువగా ఇంటి భోజనం తింటుంటాను. బయటకు వెళ్ళినా ఎక్కువగా పప్పు, సాంబారు వంటి ఆహారమే తీసుకుంటాను. అలాగే ఉన్న దాంతో సంతృప్తి చెంది, ఆనందంగా ఉంటాను.

పిండం సినిమా గురించి చెప్పండి?

హారర్ సినిమాల విషయంలో నాకో భయం ఉంటుంది. అదేంటంటే పేరుకి హారర్ సినిమా అంటారు.. కానీ అందులో అనవసరమైన కామెడీ, రొమాన్స్, సాంగ్స్ ను ఇరికిస్తుంటారు. హారర్ జానర్ అంటే హారర్ ఉండాలి. థియేటర్ లో మనం చూసేటప్పుడు ఉలిక్కిపడేలా ఉండాలి. సాయికిరణ్ దైదా పిండం కథ చెప్పగానే నచ్చింది. కొత్త దర్శకుడు అయినప్పటికీ ఆయనకి ఎంతో క్లారిటీ ఉంది. సాయి కిరణ్ తీసిన స్మోక్ అనే షార్ట్ ఫిల్మ్ చూసి ఆయన ప్రతిభపై నమ్మకంగా కలిగింది.  ఇన్ని రోజుల్లో, ఇంత బడ్జెట్ లో సినిమా పూర్తి చేస్తామని చెప్పారు. చెప్పినట్లుగానే చేశారు. నిర్మాత యశ్వంత్ ఈ కథను నమ్మి సినిమా చేశారు. ఆ తర్వాత సినిమాని చూపించి బిజినెస్ చేసుకోగలిగారు. ఇది ఖచ్చితంగా థియేటర్ లో చూసి అనుభూతి చెందాల్సిన అసలైన హారర్ సినిమా. ఈ కథ 1930, 1990, ప్రస్తుతం ఇలా మూడు కాలాల్లో జరుగుతుంది. ఒక ఇల్లు, ఒక కుటుంబం అన్నట్టుగా సినిమా ఉండదు. ఇందులో చాలా కథ ఉంటుంది. పిండం టైటిల్ తో కూడా కథ ముడిపడి ఉంటుంది.

హారర్ సినిమా కదా.. ప్రత్యేకంగా ఏమైనా హోంవర్క్ చేశారా?

ఏ సన్నివేశం చేసే ముందైనా మనం ముందుగా దానిని ఊహించుకోవాలి అని నమ్ముతాను. సంభాషణలను బట్టీ కొట్టి నటించడం నాకు ఇష్టం ఉండదు. సన్నివేశాన్ని అర్థం చేసుకొని, దానిని ఇమాజినేషన్ చేసుకొని.. అప్పుడు నటిస్తాను. దాని వల్ల నటన సహజంగా ఉండి, సన్నివేశం పండుతుంది. నేను దర్శకుల నటుడిని. ఆ సన్నివేశంలో దర్శకుడు ఏం కోరుకుంటున్నాడో అది ఇవ్వడానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తాను.

హారర్ జానర్ సినిమాలకు రిపీటెడ్ ఆడియెన్స్ ఉండరనే సందేహం కలగలేదా?

అప్పట్లో రామ్ గోపాల్ వర్మ గారు రాత్రి అనే సినిమా తీశారు. నా దృష్టిలో ఇప్పటిదాకా తెలుగులో భయంకరమైన సినిమా అంటే అదే. ఆ సినిమాని ఎన్నో సార్లు చూశాను. పలు ఇంగ్లీష్ హారర్ సినిమాలు కూడా ఎన్నోసార్లు చూశాను. పిండం అనేది కేవలం హారర్ సినిమా కాదు. ఇందులో బలమైన కథ ఉంటుంది. హార్రర్ సన్నివేశాల ఉండటమే కాకుండా.. ప్రేక్షకులకు ఎమోషనల్ గా కనెక్ట్ అయ్యేలా ఉంటుంది సినిమా. నేను కూడా ఈ చిత్రాన్ని ప్రేక్షకులతో కలిసి థియేటర్ లో చూడాలని ఎదురు చూస్తున్నాను. టీమ్ అందరూ ఎంతో ఇష్టంగా పని చేసి, మంచి అవుట్ పుట్ ఇచ్చారు. మనం మంచి సినిమా తీస్తే, ప్రేక్షకులే తమ వాళ్ళని తీసుకొని మళ్ళీ సినిమాకి వెళ్తారు. ఈ సినిమాను ప్రేక్షకులు ఆదరిస్తారనే నమ్మకం ఉంది.

పిండం టైటిల్ గురించి?

కొందరు దీనిని నెగటివ్ టైటిల్ అంటున్నారు. పిండం అనేది నెగటివ్ టైటిల్ కాదు.. పాజిటివ్ టైటిల్. పుట్టుకలోనూ, చావులోనూ పిండం ఉంటుంది. తల్లి కడుపులో పెరిగే బిడ్డను పిండం అంటారు. అలాగే మనిషి చనిపోయాక వారి ఆత్మశాంతి కోసం పెట్టే భోజనాన్ని పిండం అంటారు. ఒకటి జీవితాన్ని ఇస్తుంది. ఇంకొకటి మరణం తర్వాత కూడా ఆనందాన్ని ఇస్తుంది.  అందుకే ఇది పాజిటివ్ టైటిల్. పైగా ఇది కథకి సరిగ్గా సరిపోయే టైటిల్.

మీరు కూడా గతంలో హారర్ సినిమాలు చేశారు.. వాటితో పోలిస్తే పిండం కొత్తగా ఉండబోతుందా?

మిగతా సినిమాలతో పోలిస్తే పిండం వైవిధ్యంగా ఉంటుంది. ఇది కొన్ని కుటుంబాల ప్రయాణం. ఇది కేవలం హారర్ మాత్రమే కాదు.. ఇదొక ఎమోషనల్ డ్రామా. ప్రతి పాత్రకి ప్రాధాన్యత ఉంటుంది.

శ్రీనివాస్ అవసరాల గారు, ఈశ్వరీరావు గారి గురించి?

శ్రీనివాస్ అవసరాల కాంబినేషన్ లో నాకు సన్నివేశాలు లేవు. ఇది మూడు కాలాల్లో జరిగే కథ కదా. ఆయన వేరే టైం పీరియడ్ లో ఉంటారు. అయితే ఆయన నటించిన కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలను చూశాను. అద్భుతంగా నటించారు. ఇక ఈశ్వరీరావు గారి గురించి ప్రత్యేకంగా చెప్పుకోవాలి. ఒకసారి సన్నివేశం చిత్రీకరణ సమయంలో ఆమె తలకి గాయమైంది. ఆలస్యమైతే గాయం వాచిపోయి, షూటింగ్ కి ఇబ్బంది అవుతుందని.. వేగంగా ఆమె సన్నివేశాలను పూర్తి చేసుకొని ఆ తర్వాత హాస్పిటల్ కి వెళ్ళారు. తన వల్ల మిగతా వాళ్ళు ఇబ్బంది పడకూడదని ఆమె నిబద్ధతతో పని చేశారు. మిగతా నటీనటులు కూడా ఎంతో ఇష్టంగా పని చేశారు. చిన్న పిల్లలు కూడా అద్భుతంగా నటించారు. ఖుషీ రవి గారు అలా వచ్చి నిల్చుంటే చాలు పాత్రలో లేనమైనట్టు కనిపిస్తారు.

ఓటీటీ గురించి?

ఓటీటీ అనేది మన ప్రతిభను చూపించుకోవడానికి మరో వేదిక. అక్కడా ఎన్నో విభిన్న కంటెంట్ లు వస్తున్నాయి. నేను చేసిన రెక్కీ నాకు ఎంతో సంతృప్తి ఇచ్చింది. అలాగే ప్రస్తుతం ఓటీటీ కోసం నెట్ వర్క్, హరికథ అనే ప్రాజెక్ట్ లు చేస్తున్నాను.

తదుపరి సినిమాలు?

నేను, జి.వి. ప్రకాష్ కలిసి తమిళ్ లో బ్లాక్ మెయిల్ అనే మూవీ చేస్తున్నాం. అలాగే సంభవం అనే ఇంకో సినిమా చేస్తున్నాను. ప్రస్తుతం ఆరు ప్రాజెక్ట్ లు చేతిలో ఉన్నాయి.

The upcoming Telugu horror thriller ‘Pindam’ is slated to release in theatres worldwide on December 15. Directed by Saikiran Daida, the film features Srikanth Sriram, Kushee Ravi, Srinivas Avasarala, Easwari Rao, Ravi Varma. Other cast members include: Manik Reddy, Baby Chaitra, Baby Leisha, Vijayalakshmi and Srilatha in crucial roles.

The movie is produced by Yeshwanth Daggumati and co-produced by Prabu Raja. The story is written by Saikiran Daida, Kavi Siddhartha and Toby Osborne.

Actor Sriram, who is playing the protagonist in the film, interacted with the print/web journalists on Tuesday. Here are the excerpts.

How did the opportunity of Pindam come to you?

Pindam actually came to me during the latter part of the films that I have completed. Before Pindam I happened to do a film named ‘Inka Evaru’. Basically, when someone comes to me with a horror script, I am dead scared because when it is getting executed the story would be something else. There is an item song, two many monologues, double-meaning dialogues and other unnecessary stuff. If someone is making a crime thriller, he has to stick to the subject. But the story gets deviated and explores something else. But Pindam is truthful to its story. Horror genre is the only genre that can give the intensity to the audience. Pindam has the proper scare element to impress audiences. Every story needs a proper geography to tell a story. But it is also mandatory to keep in mind that where there is negative energy, evil spirits build a home. I will give a simple example, on Dec 22, 2003, I suffered a fire accident at Doddabetta dam near Ooty. I was supposed to dive into water that was 20 feet depth. Locals warned me not to dive, but the man who rescued me didn’t come out of the church for five days. He is an art assistant Manohar. He saw something very scary. Like plus and minus in mathematics, there is positive and negative energy in this world.

How confident are you about Pindam?

When I started my career, I didn’t have any market. Filmmakers wouldn’t have invested in me had they thought that I had no market or something else. Producer Yeshwant Daggumati has trust in the story. And he also has faith in the lead protagonist. Films keep coming every week, there was Animal that took the box office by storm, and Hi Nanna did well. Hope Pindam too will impress the audience in the coming week. I am confident that Pindam is going to give a proper theatrical experience to horror genre lovers. And the story has three different time frames: 1920, 1990 and 2023.

Unlike romcoms, horror films usually need different facial expressions and body language for horror films. Have you tried anything different from the usual?

Before going into the sets, as an actor I would imagine a sequence in my mind. I don’t by-heart the lines. I don’t have the habit of just rushing to the film sets without preparation. When you imagine a scene, you get the entire picture in your mind. Then you go and perform before the camera. That’s where you get to improvise yourself. I am directors’ actor. Pindam doesn’t boast about the scare element, it is also a content-driven film. The scariest movie that I have ever watched in Telugu was Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Ratri’. I watched it multiple times. ‘Om’, and then ‘Evil Dead’ and now ‘Insidious’. If we see ‘Evil Dead’ now, you might wonder why you were so scared watching it when you were young. You have something called emotion in the film. ‘Pindam’ has the right connection that is required to pull audiences.

Q)What is the difference between Pindam and your comedy horror film Sowkarpettai that came in 2016?

This is a journey of multiple families. And the transition that takes place in their lives is all about the story of Pindam. Everything is interconnected. Pindam is not a negative title. It is a very positive thing. Fetus is Pindam. If a soul has to rest in peace, Pindam is offered. One is giving life, one is also giving happiness after death. This is an emotional drama. It is the story of the families who have faced such aspects in the past. Still there are people who loathe girl children. What is the point of going forward in our lives? There are people who still think with such backwardness.

For me, the most important aspect is the story. Good story is about a hero. In the story of Pindam, more than anyone else it is the children that drive the story forward. I play the role of Antony, a responsible father with three children who is burdened with family pressures. He is not a superhero. How he protects his family in the process of fighting against the evil in the story. Avasarala Srinivas plays a unique character who comes on the screen in a different time frame. I loved his work. Eshwari Rao garu in a particular scene. I was supposed to hit a man who caught the throat of Eshwari. Some intuition struck me and I cautioned Eshwari Rao garu that something untoward may happen. When we enacted the scene, I hit the man with a flower vase and one of the broken pieces hit Eshwar on the head. We rushed her to the hospital. So many challenges we had to face. Despite having suffered injury, she completed the shot and went to hospital. That is her commitment towards the craft. It is all done with so much passion. An actor actually improves competitiveness. All were good actors on the sets including Kushee Ravi. She doesn’t have to act in the scene. Just by standing in the frame, she appeared as if she performed a lot. I felt inferior by looking at her. Because she was already into the character.

Are you worried about being typecast in the industry?

Yes. Previously, I made the same mistake. One reason that an actor starts picking roles hastily is because of the remuneration or some obligation. We used to do it frequently. Now it is different. We made a point that now we should not get type casted by choosing characters as they come. We should be selective in terms of script.

You have a good lover boy image in Telugu cinema. Do you think playing the father role in Pindam would affect your chances in the future?

That phase of the lover-boy image faded long ago. I have a son who is as tall as me. So it is always good to play your age. We are only depicting the characters. The lover-boy image on the screen is a false thing. I am doing a film ‘Inka Evaru’ in which I am not playing a father. That has a different outlook. In another project, a web series titled ‘Network’, I have totally a different look. Then I am doing Navy Commander which has a different characterisation compared to Pindam.

Have you ever seen a ghost in real life?

I visited a place called Ghost Hunting in Scotland. I paid money to experience the ghost. It is considered as the most haunted place to visit in Europe. There was an incident that happened in the past where an entire village was buried alive because of a pandemic. If you go there, there is a road which leads to a cemetery. On one side there is a place for Jesus followers and there is another space for anti-Jesus followers. It gives an eerie feeling if you go from one end to the other. One should pay money to see a ghost. I waited all day and returned disappointed.

Pindam is an upcoming Telugu horror film which is going to hit screens worldwide on December 15. It’s directed by Saikiran Daida and features Srikanth Sriram, Kushee Ravi, Srinivas Avasarala, Easwari Rao, Ravi Varma. Other cast members include: Manik Reddy, Baby Chaitra, Baby Leisha, Vijayalakshmi and Srilatha. The movie is produced by Yeshwanth Daggumati and co-produced by Prabu Raja. The story is written by Saikiran Daida, Kavi Siddhartha and Toby Osborne. During the Pre-release press meet, the entire cast interacted with the media on Monday. Here are the excerpts.

Producer Yeshwant Daggumati: Pindam is getting released in theatres worldwide on December 15. So far, we are content with how the film has reached out to the public. The response from the audience was amazing so far.

Q)Yeshwant, the story of Pindam is a horror genre. Director Sai Kiran has experience in directing an indie film ‘Smoke’ in Hollywood. Why did you choose this story to be made in Telugu?

Naturally, we are from Telugu so we picked a story from this land and made a film. So we want to reach out to only Telugu audiences first. So we are releasing Pindam in Telugu.

Actor Sriram said, “Sorry for being late. The Singapore to Chennai flight got delayed. I am glad that I am here without skipping the event. I somehow landed in Hyderabad by catching inter-connecting flights. I am so happy to be here. It’s a joyous occasion to share everything about the film Pindam. Please watch the film in theatres and I wish you all love it.

Q) Does Pindam have anything to do with exorcism? Did you mix both science and paranormal activity?

“This world is full of science. There is also the paranormal. You can’t say yes or no. We don’t have a choice to disapprove. Mathematically if there is plus there could be also minus. If we are going to temple at one single stroke of time, it brings so much positivity in us. We didn’t go with the specifics of exorcism in the film, we have some quality work in it.”

Q) Okariki Okaru is still fresh in audiences’ minds. Do you think Pindam reinvent your image, create a proper second image in Tollywood. Do you think author-backed roles would come to you after Pindam?

“Whether Pindam is going to reinvent my image or not, I am not sure of it. But Pindam is not some “hero-centric” film. Script is the hero here. It could be anyone, it could be Kushee or Eshwari or someone. I am part of a content-driven script, I am happy about the fact that I have a scope as an individual. I have many more projects coming up after Pindam.”

Director Sai Kiran Daida: The story started with an incident that occurred somewhere in Nalgonda district. And by weaving a fictional story to it and by thinking what genre it best suits — we finally decided upon going with the horror genre. It is a carefully crafted script. The story has been articulated very well so much so that it has the scare element to hold the attention of the audiences. Keeping this in mind, we rewrote the story as and when it was necessary. Me and our co-writer Kavi Siddharth garu rewrote it more than 100 times. It is made with rigorous pre-production work. We toiled more for the film than what a big movie deserves. We made ‘Pindam’ with so much perfection. I request media persons to watch the film, and support us.

Q)What was the reason to give the title Pindam to a horror script?

I felt the title Pindam was apt during the process of ideation. Definitely, there will be an audience who might watch the film for the sake of fear. And the next lot is those who watch it for the story. And people who are very frightened and weak-hearted, it is better not to watch it.

Q)Pindam is being hyped as the scariest horror film ever in Tollywood. What is so frightening in Pindam compared to those of RGV’s most prominent films?

Sai Kiran Daida: My favourite horror film is Ratri directed by Ram Gopal Varma. It was a straight-forward horror genre film. And Pindam is also a straight-forward horror film. There is no comedy, romance nor a sentiment. And I myself know how we shot this film. How well we crafted this film which has a horror element that scares the audience.

Q)Usually, a horror film follows a pattern in Indian cinema. A family enters a haunted house. A demon is cited by kids. It has a flashback, and frightening things keep occuring. Is this the same format Pindam follows?

This format is because, if you study a paranormal activity. A negative energy possesses a location. That is why maximum haunted stories are in the same patterns and they have to follow that pattern to evoke fear. And Pindam is going to be very different for sure.

Q)Usually, children are exempted from performing rituals during the time of Amavasya? What was the reason to shoot kids performing rituals in the movie?

Sai Kiran Daida: We planned a six-day schedule. That was the last day. We were not aware that it was Amavasya. We started shooting at 5 am, by the time it was 9 pm. everyone (kids) appeared with tilaks on their foreheads. We didn’t know that it was Amavasya. Proper care is taken to ensure that kids are not harmed on the sets. Parents also cooperated with us very well.

Actor Kushee Ravi said: “I keep manifesting good things. I always wanted to work with good directors, good producers, good actors and good technicians. And I wish it is full now. I thank Yeshwant for offering this role. I request everyone to watch the film Pindam and support us. I am playing the character named Mary in Pindam, a christian woman with two kids. In ‘Spooky College’, I played a teenager and a college-goer. And in Pindam, I played a mother of two children. As an actor you have to always break the stereotypes. As an actor you need to break the routine, always playing glamorous roles or playing for dance numbers doesn’t help, you have to be unique. Basically I am a theatre artiste, we’re told to do unique roles everytime. Even after Diya, heroines are beauty shorts, rich intro scenes. Then Diya, I did a sombre character. I am okay to do commercial films as well. I want to explore things.

Lyricist Kavi Siddharth: “For the first time when I heard the script from the makers, the nature of the story moved me a lot. The story begins with a question how to infuse the natural fear into a person without any preconceived notions and conditioning. Fear is as old as it existed. Usually, the fears that we faced during our childhood continue to haunt us even after adulthood. Predominantly, man has an impulsive nature hidden inside him. Our team tried to bring that from the story. We tried to translate it while showcasing positive elements of human relations on the screen.” Kavi Siddharth, who worked earlier with Pawan Kalyan’s Gudumba Shankar later worked for Bithiri Satti’s film, said he is happy to have collaborated with director Sai Kiran for Pindam. “As you all know, my rapport with a director depends on how he looks at the story. I worked for 12 years with Pawan Kalyan. He has a keen eye for a story. When I met director Sai Kiran I could see how intensely he wanted to tell the story on the screen. We need to give what it demands. If all these come together — literature, cinema and life, the story would come out really good if three elements are infused in a story. Ram Gopal Varma’s Raatri is a very good example. The entire team is a very matured lot and took the project forward. Eshwari Rao has done so beautifully on the screen.”

DoP Satish Manoharan said: “The movie has come out very well. We need your support. It would give a good experience to audiences.”

Music Krishna Saurab: “I would like to thank my director and producer for giving me the opportunity to score the music for the film. Not just horror, the main thing is it travels between three dif periods 1930, 90 and the present. Me and Sai Kiran were very keen on what we want on each particular frame and you will experience the same in theatres.”

Pindam trailer launched, promises a visual feast for horror enthusiasts

Roja Poolu, Aadavari Matalaku Ardhale Verule fame Sriram, Kushee Ravi are teaming up for a horror drama Pindam, directed by a debutant Saikiran Daida. Yeshwanth Daggumati of Kalaahi Media is the producer. After encouraging responses to the first look, teaser and the song – Jeeva Pindam – the trailer of the film was launched today. The film is releasing in theatres on December 15.

The trailer commences with a discussion between Srinivas Avasarala and Easwari Rao on spirits, if people after their death can harm others lives. The story shifts to a 90s backdrop when Anthony and his family move to a mysterious house. The house has a past they’re unaware of and the family is soon affected by a series of eerie events. Two children hear strange conversations from one another.

 The parents and the grandma are naturally worried and do their best to protect the children. After a spirit healer enters the house, she confirms that the house is affected by multiple spirits and asks the family to take care of the younger child. They need to protect their child before the ‘mahalaya amavasya’. A dialogue suggests regardless of one’s efforts to destroy something, they can’t restrict its internal power.

Pindam lives up to the ‘scariest film’ ever caption with its engrossing trailer that pleases horror enthusiasts with intriguing drama, thrills and a chilling backstory. The aesthetics of the film are certain to be a major attraction, with the cinematography, unique lighting techniques, music and sound design contributing to its appeal. One also can’t wait to watch the gripping premise, performances on the screen.

Pindam will unfold across three timelines – present-day scenario besides dating back to the 1930s and 1990s.  Ravi Varma plays another crucial role. Saikiran Daida , Kavi Siddartha have written the story while Satish Manoharan is the cinematographer. Krishna Saurabh Surampalli has composed the music and Shirish Prasad is the editor. Jashuva and Vishnu Nair are the stunt director and the art director respectively.

అద్భుతమైన కథతో రూపొందిన ‘పిండం’ చిత్రం ప్రేక్షకులను ఖచ్చితంగా అలరిస్తుంది: నిర్మాత యశ్వంత్ దగ్గుమాటి

ప్రముఖ హీరో  శ్రీరామ్, ఖుషీ రవి జంటగా నటించిన చిత్రం ‘పిండం’. ‘ది స్కేరియస్ట్ ఫిల్మ్’ అనేది ఉప శీర్షిక. ఈ సినిమాతో సాయికిరణ్ దైదా దర్శకుడిగా పరిచయం అవుతున్నారు. కళాహి మీడియా బ్యానర్‌పై యశ్వంత్ దగ్గుమాటి ఈ చిత్రాన్ని నిర్మించారు. ఈ సినిమా డిసెంబర్ 15వ తేదీన ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా భారీగా విడుదల కానుంది. ఈ నేపథ్యంలో చిత్ర బృందం ప్రచార కార్యక్రమాలలో వేగం పెంచింది. శనివారం నాడు నిర్మాత యశ్వంత్ దగ్గుమాటి విలేఖర్లతో ముచ్చటించి చిత్ర విశేషాలను పంచుకున్నారు.

పిండం ప్రయాణం ఎలా మొదలైంది?
నా పేరు యశ్వంత్. నాకు యూఎస్ లో ఐటీ కంపెనీలు ఉన్నాయి. ఎప్పటినుంచో సినిమా చేయాలని ఉంది. ఓ మంచి కథతో సినిమా చేద్దామని ఇండియాకి వచ్చాము. మొదట వేరే కథ చేద్దామనుకున్నాం. అయితే దర్శకుడికి అనుకోకుండా ఈ కథ ఆలోచన వచ్చింది. వారం రోజుల్లోనే కథ పూర్తి చేసి, పిండం అనే టైటిల్ చెప్పారు. మీ అందరి లాగానే మేము కూడా మొదట టైటిల్ విని ఆశ్చర్యపోయాము. అయితే ఒక జీవి జన్మించాలంటే పిండం నుంచే రావాలి. మరణం తర్వాత పిండమే పెడతారు. జననంలోనూ, మరణంలోనూ ఉంటుంది కాబట్టి పిండం టైటిల్ పెట్టడంలో తప్పేముంది? సినిమా చూసిన తర్వాత ప్రేక్షకులకి కూడా మనం ఈ టైటిల్ ఎందుకు పెట్టామో అర్థమవుతుందని దర్శకుడు చెప్పారు. కథ ఓకే అనుకున్నాక పనులన్నీ చకచకా జరిగిపోయాయి. జూన్ లో షూటింగ్ ప్రారంభమైంది. సెప్టెంబర్ కి షూటింగ్ పూర్తి చేసి, పోస్ట్ ప్రొడక్షన్ పనులు మొదలుపెట్టాము.

దర్శకుడితో పరిచయం ఎలా జరిగింది?
దర్శకుడు నాకు మంచి స్నేహితుడు. వ్యాపారాల్లో కూడా భాగస్వామిగా ఉన్నాడు. అతను మంచి బిజినెస్ మేన్, అలాగే మంచి దర్శకుడు కూడా. 2014-15 సమయంలో నాకు పరిచయమయ్యాడు. అప్పటి నుంచే కథలు రాసుకునేవాడు. ఎప్పటికైనా దర్శకుడు అవ్వాలని చెప్పేవాడు. ఏళ్ళు గడుస్తున్నా అదే పట్టుదలతో ఉన్నాడు. మొదట సిద్ధు జొన్నలగడ్డతో ఓ క్రైమ్ కామెడీ సినిమాని డల్లాస్ లో చేయాలని సన్నాహాలు చేశాము. కానీ అదే సమయంలో కోవిడ్ రావడంతో వాయిదా పడింది. ఆ తర్వాత అందరూ ఇతర ప్రాజెక్ట్ లతో బిజీ అయ్యారు. అప్పుడు వేరే సినిమా చేద్దాం అనుకున్నప్పుడు, అతికొద్ది సమయంలోనే దర్శకుడు ఈ పిండం కథని రాశాడు. ఇది చాలా అద్భుతమైన కథ. ఇది ప్రస్తుతం, 1990 లలో, 1930 లలో ఇలా మూడు కాలాలలో జరిగే కథ. ఇది మా మొదటి సినిమా అయినప్పటికీ ఇండియాలోనూ, ఓవర్సీస్ లోనూ భారీగానే విడుదల చేస్తున్నాం.

ఈ ప్రాజెక్ట్ లోకి శ్రీరామ్ ఎలా వచ్చారు?
మా కాస్టింగ్ డైరెక్టర్ కొన్ని ఆప్షన్లు ఇచ్చారు. దర్శకుడికి శ్రీరామ్ గారి పేరు వినగానే ఆయనే కరెక్ట్ అనిపించింది. దర్శకుడికి ఒక విజన్ ఉంటుంది కదా, ఆ పాత్రకి శ్రీరామ్ గారు సరిగ్గా సరిపోతారని ఎంపిక చేశారు. శ్రీరామ్ గారు కూడా తెలుగులో కథానాయకుడిగా చేసి చాలా కాలమైంది. మా దర్శకుడు హాలీవుడ్ నటీనటులతో స్మోక్ అనే ఒక షార్ట్ ఫిల్మ్ చేశారు. అది చూసి, ఒక 10-15 నిమిషాల కథ విని శ్రీరామ్ గారు వెంటనే సినిమా చేయడానికి అంగీకరించారు.

సినిమా ఎలా ఉండబోతుంది?
మిగతా హారర్ చిత్రాలతో పోలిస్తే, ఇది భిన్నంగా ఉంటుంది. ఈ తరహాలో సినిమా రావడం ఇదే మొదటిసారి. ఈ సినిమాకి పిండం టైటిలే సరైనది. దాని చుట్టూనే కథ తిరుగుతుంది. సహజంగా ఉంటుంది చిత్రం. ప్రేక్షకులకు ఈ సినిమా ఖచ్చితంగా నచ్చుతుంది. మేము కేవలం ఒక్క సినిమా తీయడానికి పరిశ్రమకు రాలేదు. దీని తర్వాత వరుసగా మరిన్ని విభిన్న చిత్రాలు చేస్తాం.

కొత్త నిర్మాతగా ఏమైనా ఇబ్బందులు ఎదుర్కొన్నారా?
100 కోట్లు కాదు 1000 కోట్లు ఉన్నా సినిమా చేయడం అంత తేలిక కాదు. వందల మందితో కలిసి పని చేయాల్సి ఉంటుంది. అన్నీ కలిసి రావాలి. అప్పుడే వాటంతట అవి పనులు జరుగుతుంటాయి. లేదంటే ఎన్ని కోట్ల డబ్బులున్నా ఇబ్బందులు పడాల్సి వస్తుంది. అలాగే షూటింగ్ సమయంలో సినీ కార్మికులను చూసి బాధ కలిగింది. తెల్లవారుజామున వచ్చి రాత్రి వరకు గొడ్డు చాకిరి చేస్తే వారికి తక్కువ డబ్బులే వస్తాయి. అయినప్పటికీ సినిమా మీద ఇష్టంతో వారి పని చేస్తుంటారు. నేను వారి జీవితాలను మార్చలేకపోవచ్చు, కానీ నాతో కలిసి పని చేసిన ప్రతి ఒక్కరినీ నా వాళ్ళగానే భావిస్తాను.

సినిమా అనుకున్న బడ్జెట్ లోనే అయిందా? బిజినెస్ బాగా జరిగిందా?
మేము అనుకున్న బడ్జెట్ కంటే తక్కువలోనే సినిమాని పూర్తి చేయగలిగాము. బిజినెస్ పట్ల సంతృప్తిగా ఉన్నాము. ట్రైలర్ చూసిన తర్వాత పలువురు డిస్ట్రిబ్యూటర్లు వాళ్లంతట వాళ్ళే మమ్మల్ని సంప్రదించారు. మంచి ధరకే సినిమా పంపిణీ హక్కులను అమ్మడం జరిగింది. ఓటీటీ కి కూడా మంచి ఆఫర్లు వచ్చాయి.

షూటింగ్ సమయంలో ఏవో అనుకోని ఘటనలు జరిగాయట?
ఒకరు ఫిట్స్ వచ్చి పడిపోయారు. ఒకరికి కాలు విరిగింది. ఒకసారి సెట్ లోకి పాము వచ్చింది. ఇంకోసారి ఈశ్వరి గారి తలకి గాయమైంది. అలాగే ఒకసారి ఆదివారం అమావాస్య అని తెలియకుండా అర్ధరాత్రి షూటింగ్ ప్లాన్ చేశాం. చైల్డ్ ఆర్టిస్ట్ వాళ్ళ మదర్ వచ్చి అమావాస్య అర్ధరాత్రి అని భయపడుతుంటే, దగ్గరలోని గుడి నుంచి కుంకుమ తెప్పించి అందరికీ బొట్లు పెట్టించాము.

సినిమా అవుట్ పుట్ చూసుకున్నాక ఏమనిపించింది?
సినిమా మేము అనుకున్న దానికంటే చాలా బాగా వచ్చింది. దర్శకుడు మాకు చెప్పిన దానికంటే తక్కువ రోజుల్లోనే పూర్తి చేసి, మంచి అవుట్ పుట్ ఇచ్చారు.

నటీనటుల గురించి?
సినిమాలో ఉన్నది తక్కువ పాత్రలే అయినప్పటికీ అందరూ అద్భుతంగా నటించారు. అందరూ సింగిల్ టేక్ ఆర్టిస్ట్ లే. ముఖ్యంగా ఇద్దరు చిన్న పిల్లలు అద్భుతంగా నటించారు. అవసరాల శ్రీనివాస్ గారు కూడా ఒక ముఖ్య పాత్ర చేశారు. మా దర్శకుడు చేసిన స్మోక్ షార్ట్ ఫిల్మ్ చూసి, ఆయన వెంటనే ఈ సినిమా చేయడానికి అంగీకరించారు.

సాంకేతికంగా సినిమా ఎలా ఉండబోతుంది?
హారర్ సినిమాలకు సంగీతం కీలకం. నేపథ్యం సంగీతం అద్భుతంగా ఉంటుంది. విజువల్స్ కూడా అద్భుతంగా ఉంటాయి.

Pindam will keep audiences on their toes: Producer Yeshwanth Daggumati

Pindam is a multi-genre film that is hitting the screens worldwide on December 15. Produced by Yeshwanth Daggumati, the film is directed by a newbie Saikiran Daida.

Starring actor Sriram, Easwari Rao, Ravi Varma, Srinivas Avasarala, Sriram, Kushee Ravi in key roles, the movie is produced under the banner Kalaahi Media.

In a chat with media persons on Saturday, producer Yeshwanth divulges some insights about his career in IT and venturing into films.

“I own a chain of software companies in the USA. With the urge of venturing into filmmaking, I returned to India along with my friend Saikiran Daida. However, we happened to stumble upon this story Pindam rather than producing our own story which we earlier decided. Hearing the title Pindam, I was perplexed the same way as others. If a soul has to take birth, it has to enter into a pindam. And Pindam is offered when a person vacates a body. People may have different perceptions about the terms and theories revolving around it. But I felt intrigued by its storyline. Director Saikiran wrote the story within a week. Storyboarding was done within 10 days. The entire cast was finalised within no time. And when I went on to the sets in June.”

Yashwanth says his first film was supposed to happen with actor Siddu Jonnalagadda. “It was a crime comedy. But the lockdown gave a heavy jolt to the plan. Everything had gone haywire. The visas and other formalities were cumbersome so we held the project back. Kona Venkat was also the co-producer of the film. Now we came with Pindam. It is a multi-genre film. It has a message with elements of horror stretching to the timelines of 1930 to 1991 to 2023.”

Is running a film production the same as running an IT company?
More or less it is the same as we have to deal with people. It is about managing people.

Why did you have to select Sriram as the protagonist in Pindam?
After writing the story, we have a few names for the casting director. Sriram’s name was new and audiences haven’t seen him in Telugu for the past a few years. Director thought Sriram would fit the bill so we selected him. The director has earlier made a Hollywood film starring the local artistes in the USA. The film titled ‘Smoke’ won second prize in a film festival contest.

How is Pindam different from other horror films in Telugu?
Usually, if you want to scare audiences with a horror film. It has to be a story that delves on a proper background, there would be a backstory for every story. And you make best possible climax for a horror tale to frighten the audience. But in Pindam, from the word go, there are some 50 scenes that make viewers scared every 10 minutes. I think this is the first time a horror film has so many frightening scenes.

Tell us about the title Pindam?
Pindam is the apt title for the story. I want to establish our production with a realistic touch. I am not here to make a film and jet off to the US. I have 10 more scripts to get onto the sets.

Mostly, NRI producers from the US come to India and suffer a lot due to practical problems. Have you faced challenges for the debut film Pindam?
I have a strong support team. Mainly my manager Suresh, next our casting director, next is our Assistant Directors. Without all their support, I wouldn’t have executed it well. When my cashier could not make it in one day, I distributed the payments in the end. The technicians or the lightboys or the junior artistes had to come from Krishna Nagar to Ramoji Film City at 6 in the morning. Imagine how painful it is to get up early in the morning and come to the sets on time which is two hours far from your home. And they earn a paltry Rs 1,000 at the end of the day. I felt sad and helpless. I couldn’t do anything, but things have to move forward. I treated them as my own team.

Don’t you think it is very difficult to release a film if you are a newcomer?
Actually, I felt how challenging it would if I had to go for my own release. But after watching the trailer, many distributors have come. We picked the best with a good rate. For digital release, we’re in talks with a couple of them. OTT is almost finalised.

You must have faced many practical challenges. Tell us about it.
One day, we’re shooting in a remote location where you cannot see a house in plain sight. Seven years kids are playing on a terrace at midnight after 12. It happened to be a Sunday Amavasya. One of the mothers was worried about her girl and asked us to take her child with her. However, we convinced her by applying tilak from a nearby temple. That night, we underwent a terrible mess. My manager Suresh broke his leg. A person suffered seizures. Eashwari garu got hurt on the face when a doll slipped out of Sriram’s hand. That was a horrible night. Yet we managed to complete the shoot.
