‘మార్టిన్ లూథర్ కింగ్’ ట్రైలర్ ను బుధవారం సాయంత్రం విడుదల చేశారు. కనీసం తన పేరేంటో కూడా తెలియని చెప్పులు కుట్టే వ్యక్తిగా సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు పాత్రను పరిచయం చేస్తూ ట్రైలర్ ప్రారంభమైంది. అతనికి ‘మార్టిన్ లూథర్ కింగ్’ అనే పేరు పెట్టడం ఆసక్తికరంగా ఉంది. అతను నివసించే గ్రామంలో ఎన్నికలు వస్తాయి. ప్రత్యర్థులు నరేష్, వెంకటేష్ మహా ఎలాగైనా గెలవాలని పోటీ పడతారు. గెలుపుకోసం విశ్వప్రయత్నాలు చేస్తారు. అయితే గెలుపుని నిర్ణయించే ఒక్క ఓటు మార్టిన్ లూథర్ కింగ్(సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు)ది కావడంతో.. ఒక్క రాత్రిలో అతని జీవితం మలుపు తిరుగుతుంది. ఓటు విలువని తెలియని జేస్తూనే వినోదభరితంగా సాగిన ఈ ట్రైలర్ ఆకట్టుకుంటోంది. “వాడుకోవడం చేతకానప్పుడు స్వతంత్రం ఉంటే ఎంత లేకపోతే ఎంత?” వంటి డైలాగ్ లు ఆలోచింపజేసేలా ఉన్నాయి. ట్రైలర్ లో సంగీతం, కెమెరా పనితనం కూడా ఆకట్టుకున్నాయి. ట్రైలర్ తో సినిమాపై అంచనాలు రెట్టింపు అయ్యాయి.ఇప్పటికే తెలుగు రాష్ట్రాల్లోని పలు నగరాల్లో ముందస్తు ప్రీమియర్‌ షోలను ప్రదర్శించగా ప్రేక్షకుల నుంచి విశేష స్పందన లభించింది. ఈ నేపథ్యంలో బుధవారం నాడు విలేకర్లతో ముచ్చటించిన సీనియర్ నటుడు వి.కె. నరేష్ చిత్ర విశేషాలను పంచుకున్నారు.’మార్టిన్ లూథర్ కింగ్’ ఎలా ఉండబోతుంది? ఇందులో కింగ్ ఎవరు అవుతారు?
కింగ్ ఎవరు అవుతారు అనేది మీరు సినిమా చూసి తెలుసుకోవాలి. వెంకటేష్ మహాతో నా ప్రయాణం ఉమామహేశ్వర ఉగ్రరూపస్య నుంచి మొదలైంది. ఇది యువ దర్శకుల యుగం. చాలా మంచి సినిమా చేశాం. మంచి సందేశంతో కూడిన వినోదభరితంగా సాగే సినిమా ఇది. వినోదం, సందేశం కలిసి రావడం చాలా అరుదు. ఇప్పటికే ఈ సినిమా ప్రీమియర్లు మొదలుపెట్టాం. సినిమా మీద ఎంతో నమ్మకం ఉంటేనే కానీ.. ఇలా ముందుగానే ప్రజలకు చూపించి సినిమాని విడుదల చేయం. నేను వరంగల్ లో చూశాను. మహిళలు, యువత అన్ని వర్గాల ప్రేక్షకులతో థియేటర్ నిండిపోయింది. సినిమా ప్రారంభం నుండి చివరి వరకు ప్రేక్షకులు ఎంజాయ్ చేస్తూనే ఉన్నారు. ఇప్పుడు యువత కొత్త కొత్త సబ్జెక్టులతో వస్తున్నారు. వేసవిలో కొబ్బరినీళ్లు తాగాలి, చలి కాలంలో వేడి వేడి బజ్జీలు తింటాం, కాఫీ తాగుతాం. అలాగే ఇప్పుడు పొలిటికల్ సీజన్. ప్రస్తుతం తెలుగు రాష్ట్రాల్లో రాజకీయాలు వేడిగా ఉన్నాయి. ఇది ఎవరినీ ఉద్దేశించి తీసిన సినిమా కాదు. రాజకీయాల వల్ల ప్రస్తుతం సామాన్యులు ఎదుర్కొంటున్న యదార్థ పరిస్థితులను సినిమాగా తీయడం జరిగింది. సినిమా అందంగా, వినోదభరితంగా ఉంటుంది. సంపూర్ణేష్ కి ఇది సెకండ్ లైఫ్ అవుతుంది. నేను, మహా ముఖ్య పాత్రలు పోషించాం. దాదాపు 30 మంది నటీనటులు ఈ సినిమాతో పరిచయమవుతున్నారు.మీ పాత్ర ఎలా ఉండబోతుంది?
చెట్టు పేరు చెప్పుకొని కాయలు అమ్ముకునే తరహా పాత్ర నేను పోషించాను. గ్రామ సర్పంచ్ వారసత్వం కోసం పరితపించే పాత్ర. నా వయసు కంటే దాదాపు 20 ఏళ్ళు తక్కువ వయసున్న పాత్రలో నటించాను. అలాగే మహా పాత్ర మరో వర్గం. అసలు రాజకీయం గ్రామాల్లోనే జరుగుతుంది. దాని ఆధారంగా చేసుకొని తీసిన సినిమా ఇది. నిజంగా ఒక వెనకపడిన గ్రామానికి వెళ్ళి సినిమాని చిత్రీకరించాం. ఈ సినిమాకి బలం వెంకటేష్ మహా స్క్రిప్ట్. దానిని దర్శకురాలు పూజ అద్భుతంగా తెరకెక్కించారు. నాకు, మహా, సంపూతో పాటు చాలామందికి ఈ సినిమా లైఫ్ అవుతుంది. ఒక మహిళా దర్శకురాలు(విజయనిర్మల) కొడుకుగా పూజ దర్శకత్వంలో నటించడం సంతోషంగా ఉంది.
రాజకీయ అనుభవమున్న వ్యక్తిగా ఈ సినిమాకి మీరు ఏమైనా సూచనలు చేశారా?
ఒక స్టేజ్ డ్రామా కోసం చేసినట్టుగా ఈ సినిమా కోసం వర్క్ షాప్స్ చేశాం. స్క్రిప్ట్ రీడింగ్ సమయంలో చిన్న చిన్న మార్పులు చేశాం. అది సహజంగా జరిగేది. ఇప్పుడు కొత్త తరం వస్తుంది. ప్రేక్షకులు కూడా సినిమా చూసే విధానం మారిపోయింది. ఫార్ములా సినిమాలను ప్రేక్షకులు ఆదరించడంలేదు. పూర్తి వినోదాత్మక చిత్రాలను లేదా యదార్ధానికి దగ్గరగా ఉన్న చిత్రాలను ఆదరిస్తున్నారు. ఈ సినిమాలో ప్రత్యేకత ఏంటంటే రెండూ ఉన్నాయి. నవ్వుతుంటారు, టెన్షన్ పడుతుంటారు, ఎంజాయ్ చేస్తుంటారు. అదే సమయంలో రియాలిటీకి దగ్గరగా ఉంటుంది. ప్రతి పాత్రకి కొత్తదనం ఉంటుంది. ఒకే గ్రామంలో రెండు ప్రాంతాలు, రెండు మాండలికాలు ఉంటాయి. అది కొత్తగా అనిపిస్తుంది. సామాన్యుడు కింగ్ అయినప్పుడే సమాజం బాగుపడుతుంది అనేది ఈ సినిమాలో చూపించారు. దీనిని వినోదభరితంగా చెప్పారు. అలాగే సంగీతం కూడా అద్భుతంగా ఉంటుంది. సినిమాలో మార్టిన్ లూథర్ కింగ్ వాయిస్ వినిపిస్తుంది. అప్పుడు ఒళ్ళు జలదరిస్తుంది. ఇది చాలా అరుదైన సినిమా. ఫోటోగ్రఫీ కూడా చాలా బాగుంటుంది. రచయిత, దర్శకులు, నిర్మాతలతో మొత్తం చిత్ర బృందం సమిష్టి కృషి వల్ల సినిమా ఇంత బాగా వచ్చింది. ఈ సినిమా ఖచ్చితంగా విజయం సాధిస్తుంది.
మాతృక సినిమా మండేలా చూశారా?
ఇది రీమేక్ కంటే కూడా స్ఫూర్తి పొంది తీసిన సినిమా. ఎందుకంటే మన తెలుగు రాజకీయాలు, మన నేటివిటీ తగ్గట్టుగా తీసిన సినిమా ఇది. దీనిని ఓ కొత్త సినిమాగా చూడొచ్చు. సరిగ్గా ఎన్నికల సీజన్ లో విడుదలవుతుంది. యువతని ఈ సినిమా బాగా మెప్పిస్తుంది అనుకుంటున్నాను. ప్రీమియర్స్ సమయంలో ప్రేక్షకులకు కిరీటాలు ఇచ్చి, మీకు మీరు కింగ్ అనిపించినప్పుడు కిరీటం పెట్టుకోమని చెప్పారు. ప్రేక్షకులు నిజంగానే సినిమాని ఆస్వాదిస్తూ కిరీటాలు పెట్టుకుంటున్నారు. అది కొత్తగా అనిపించింది.
రాజకీయాల్లో క్రియాశీలకంగా పనిచేసిన వ్యక్తిగా ప్రస్తుత రాజకీయాల గురించి ఏం చెప్తారు?
సినిమాల్లో పీక్స్ లో ఉన్న టైంలో రాజకీయాల్లోకి వెళ్ళాను. 1998-2000 సమయంలో వెంటవెంటనే కూలిపోతున్న సంకీర్ణ ప్రభుత్వాలను చూసి.. వాజపేయి గారి లాంటివారు వస్తే బాగుంటుందన్న ఉద్దేశంతో అప్పుడు ప్రత్యక్ష రాజకీయాల్లోకి వెళ్ళాను. ఆ సమయంలో చిన్న చిన్న గ్రామాల్లోకి కూడా వెళ్ళి నిస్వార్థంగా సేవ చేశాను. ఇప్పుడు రాజకీయాల్లోకి వచ్చే ఉద్దేశం అసలు లేదు. ప్రస్తుతం రాజకీయాల్లో ఒకరినొకరు వ్యక్తిగతంగా దూషించుకుంటున్నారు. స్వార్ధ రాజకీయం పెరిగిపోతుంది. మార్టిన్ లూథర్ కింగ్ ని చూశాం, హిట్లర్ ని చూశాం. రాజకీయాల్లో మంచి చెడు అన్నీ ఉంటాయి. భారతదేశం గొప్ప ప్రజాస్వామ్యం కలిగి ఉందని మాత్రం గర్వంగా చెప్పగలను. అయితే ఇప్పుడు ఎన్నికల్లో పోటీ చేయాలంటే కోట్లల్లో డబ్బులు కావాలి. ఎన్నికల్లో గెలిచాక ఆ డబ్బుని మళ్ళీ ప్రజల నుంచే దోచుకుంటారు. వారి పార్టీ అధికారంలో లేకపోతే జైలుకి వెళ్తారు. ప్రస్తుతం ఇలా స్వార్థం, కక్షలతో రాజకీయాలు నిండిపోయాయి. సినిమా అనేది రాజకీయాలకు బాణం లాంటిది. సినిమా ద్వారా ఎంతో చెప్పొచ్చు. ఇక నుంచి నేను ఏదైనా మంచి చెప్పాలనుకుంటే సినిమా ద్వారానే చెప్పాలి అనుకుంటున్నాను. ‘మార్టిన్ లూథర్ కింగ్’ కూడా ప్రస్తుత రాజాకీయ పరిస్థితులను కళ్ళకు కట్టినట్టు చూపించారు. ఈ సినిమాలో నేను భాగం కావడం సంతోషంగా ఉంది.

*Gripping trailer of the political satire impresses film buffs
Martin Luther King, the joint production of YNOT Studios, Reliance Entertainment and Mahayana Motion Pictures, directed by Puja Kolluru, is set to arrive in theatres on October 27. Starring Sampoornesh Babu in the lead, Martin Luther King features VK Naresh, Sharanya Pradeep among others in key roles.
Venkatesh Maha, who directed two critically acclaimed films – C/O Kancharapalem, Uma Maheshwara Ugra Roopasya, is the creative producer of the project. He’s additionally written the screenplay, dialogues and also played a pivotal character in the film.
Starting on October 9, the cast and crew embarked on a tour of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, offering early premieres in cities like Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Nellore, Kurnool and Warangal. The enthusiastic reception and reactions from these premieres have been truly remarkable.
Ahead of its release, senior actor Naresh VK interacted with journalists on Wednesday. Here are the excerpts from the interview.
What is Martin Luther King all about?
My journey with Venkatesh Maha started with Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya. The current phase of Telugu cinema belongs to the young generation of filmmakers, and that’s the reason why I am here. Martin Luther King — in short ‘King’ is an absolute entertainer with a bullet-like message in it. Generally, it is rare we find a movie that has a message and also entertainment. Martin Luther King is an entertainment-based film. The result of early premiers in cities like Visakhapatnam, Warangal, Nellore, Kurnool and was incredible. This is the new trend that was started with Samajavaragamana. If you’re confident with the content, you could show your movie to the audience before the release date. That’s how you reach the audience. Mahayana Motion Pictures Productions held continuous premieres. When I watched with a packed house in Warangal, ladies including all age groups and children watched the show. There were claps, cheers, and roars everywhere throughout the runtime. That was the response we got for Martin Luther King.
What was the reason behind accepting the film?
If you look at my filmography for the last two years, I have done some seven to eight films which were all blockbusters. Even the content on OTT platform — Malli Pelli, Samajavaragamana of course, Intinti Ramayanam, and Great Indian Suicide — had a tremendous positive response from audiences. Because I have been very choosy in selecting scripts. Believe me, I heard as many as 14 scripts in the last one month. Youngsters are coming up with novel concepts and ideas. There is a unique flavour coming out every season from Telugu cinema. Both the Telugu States are witnessing the election fever. It’s a political season. I can’t say it is political satire. It reflects the political scenario of the present day. It begs the question of who is enjoying the result. More than the political satire, the story is beautifully woven to reflect the present-day affairs of the political state.”
The senior actor added, “Title role is played by Sampoornesh Babu. It is directed by Puja Kolluri while Venkatesh Maha provided the screenplay and the dialogues for the movie. Martin Luther King is a refreshing experience for me. Politics and business have become hand-in-glove today. In this present situation, some leaders are honestly trying to bring about a change in the system. I am playing the role of a village president who reaps the benefits from the system by using the name of his family in politics. The entire film was shot in Ongole. The story is set in a rural backdrop. The power of the film is the script. Puja should be appreciated for the way she took the story forward. Sampoo will earn accolades for his lead role. I have earlier worked with five lady directors. I am sure women’s power will rule the film industry in the coming days.”
Naresh says that the beauty of the script is that it has so many newcomers working for it. “Workshops have been conducted with all the 60 artistes of the film. The new-age cinema has broken the rules of moviemaking. There is no set formula that you can say would work. Martin Luther King is an absolute entertainer and every character offers a unique flavour. The music scored by Smaran Sai is another added highlight of the film. The story is told with thematic songs and background score and you would hear the voice of Martin Luther King’s voice as the reference to one of the scenes. It’s a rare film.”
It’s a remake of Tamil language film Mandela. Have you watched the original before the shoot began?
“More than saying it as a remake, it is inspired by the events that happened in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Of course, it has the basis of the original work. However the political atmosphere of the Telugu States is entirely different from other regions. It is a fresh film. I think the youth will get more attracted to the film during this election time. We started the promotional campaign in a very unique way.”
You have seen politics from very close quarters. How do you define the present political situation in Telugu States?
I’ve not seen politics from close quarters, in fact I played a very crucial role in politics by keeping aside films for about eight years. I was a busy artiste back then. I am an emotional person, and if I like something I am so determined that I won’t sleep until the task gets completed. During the 1999 and early 2000s, our country was witnessing a wave of coalition governments. And they failed miserably at the helm of affairs. There were instances where governments collapsed in just a single day. Watching all the political episodes on the television, I was moved to tears. After watching the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, I had taken a conscious decision to grow as a politician. I was ideologically moved by the great leader. I made up my mind and went to rural Rayalaseema to work there. I was exposed to the public never before when I started working in the faction hotbed. I did whatever I could. Later, I came back to films nearly after 10 years. And I never want to enter into mainstream politics anymore. I would like to deliver the message through films. Actor late SV Ranga Rao garu was my idol. Like how cinema has been changing its form, politics too is changing its avatars.
