వైనాట్ స్టూడియోస్, రిలయన్స్ ఎంటర్‌టైన్‌మెంట్ సగర్వంగా సమర్పిస్తున్న చిత్రం “మార్టిన్ లూథర్ కింగ్”. మహాయాన మోషన్ పిక్చర్స్ నిర్మించిన ఈ చిత్రానికి పూజ కొల్లూరు దర్శకత్వం వహించారు. ఈ సినిమాలో సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు, వి.కె. నరేష్, శరణ్య ప్రదీప్ వంటి ప్రతిభావంతులైన నటీనటులు నటించారు. ‘కేరాఫ్ కంచరపాలెం’, ‘ఉమామహేశ్వర ఉగ్రరూపస్య’ చిత్రాలతో దర్శకుడిగా విశేషంగా ఆకట్టుకున్న వెంకటేష్ మహా.. ఈ చిత్రానికి స్క్రీన్ ప్లే, డైలాగ్స్ అందించడంతో పాటు క్రియేటివ్ ప్రొడ్యూసర్ గా వ్యవహరించారు. అంతేకాదు ఈ సినిమాలో ఆయన ముఖ్యపాత్ర పోషించడం విశేషం. వినోద ప్రధానంగా రూపొందిన ఈ రాజకీయ వ్యంగ్య చిత్రం అక్టోబర్ 27న ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా థియేటర్లలో విడుదల కానుంది. ఈ నేపథ్యంలో మంగళవారం నాడు విలేకర్లతో ముచ్చటించిన సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు, వెంకటేష్ మహా చిత్ర విశేషాలను పంచుకున్నారు.

ఈ రీమేక్ చేయడానికి కారణం ఏంటి? తెలుగుకి తగ్గట్టుగా ఎలాంటి మార్పులు చేశారు?
సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు: తెలుగుకి తగ్గట్టుగా చాలా మార్పులు చేశారు. మహా గారు సినిమా చేద్దామని పిలిచి, మండేలా మూవీ చూపించారు. నాకు తమిళ్ అంతగా అర్థంకాదు అంటే, పర్లేదు మీ ఆ పాత్రను అర్థం చేసుకోండి చాలు. ఇప్పటిదాకా మీరు చేసిన సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు, భారీ డైలాగ్ లు అలాంటివి వద్దు. మాకు కొత్తగా కావాలని చెప్పారు. నా నుంచి కొత్తగా ఏదో ఆశిస్తున్నారని అర్థమై, సరే చేద్దామని చెప్పాను.

ఈ పాత్రను సంపూర్ణేష్ గారితో చేపించాలనే ఆలోచన మీకు ఎలా వచ్చింది?
వెంకటేష్ మహా: మొదట వైనాట్ స్టూడియోస్ నుంచి ఈ సినిమా డైరెక్ట్ చేయమని నాకు ఫోన్ వచ్చింది. అప్పటికే నా దగ్గర ఒరిజినల్ కథలు చాలా ఉన్నాయి. ఉమామహేశ్వర ఉగ్రరూపస్య కూడా అప్పుడు కాస్త ఖాళీ సమయం ఉండటం మరియు ఇతర కారణాల వల్ల చేయడం జరిగింది. ఈ సినిమా విషయంలో మాత్రం నేను చేయలేనని చెప్పాను. ఒకసారి సినిమా చూడమంటే చూశాను. చూశాక అర్థమైంది.. ఇది ఖచ్చితంగా చెప్పాల్సిన కథ. ప్రజాస్వామ్యం ఎన్ని దేశాల్లో ఉంటే అన్ని దేశాల్లో చూపించాల్సిన సినిమా. అన్ని భాషల్లోనూ చెప్పాల్సిన కథ. ఆ తర్వాత పూజ గారిని దర్శకురాలు అనుకున్నాం. సుధ కొంగర లాంటి వారితో సినిమాలు చేసి ఉన్నారు కాబట్టి పూజ ఎంపిక పట్ల వైనాట్ స్టూడియోస్ వారు చాలా హ్యాపీ. అయితే ఈ పాత్రకి ఏ నటుడిని తీసుకోవాలి అనేదే అసలైన చిక్కు. వైనాట్ స్టూడియోస్ శశి గారు 20 రోజుల్లో వస్తాం అన్నారు. మేము పీపీటీ రెడీ చేసి, తెలుగుకి తగ్గట్టుగా ఎలా తీయబోతున్నాం అనేది ఆయనకి వివరించాలి. అన్నీ సిద్ధమయ్యాయి. కానీ నటుడి ఎంపిక జరగలేదు. రూపురేఖల్లో యోగిబాబులా ఉండే నటుడి కోసం మేం వెతకలేదు. తెలుగు నేటివిటీ కి తగ్గట్టుగా ఆ పాత్రకి సరిపోయే నటుడిని వెతికాం. 19 రోజులు గడిచాయి. రేపే శశి గారికి అన్నీ వివరాలు చెప్పాలి. ఏదైనా టెన్షన్ వచ్చినప్పుడు ఓ 10-15 నిమిషాలు కళ్ళు మూసుకొని పడుకొని ఆలోచించడం నాకు అలవాటు. అప్పుడు సడెన్ గా సంపూర్ణేష్ గుర్తుకొచ్చారు. సంపూ గారి లైఫ్ స్టైల్ గురించి ఒక డాక్యుమెంటరీ చూశాం. ఈయన తెర మీద ఆ పాత్రలో కనిపిస్తే ఒక సగటు మనిషి వచ్చాడురా అనే భావన చూసే ప్రేక్షకులకు కలుగుతుంది అన్నాను. ఆ తర్వాత ఆయనతో మాట్లాడటం, ఆయన ఈ పాత్ర చేయడానికి అంగీకరించడం జరిగిపోయాయి.

ఇప్పటిదాకా సంపూ గారు చేసిన పాత్రలు, సినిమాలు వేరు. ఆ ఇమేజ్ కి భిన్నంగా ఈ పాత్ర చేయించడం ఛాలెంజింగ్ గా అనిపించలేదా?
వెంకటేష్ మహా: ఆయన కూడా పాత్రకి తగ్గట్టుగా తనని తాను మలుచుకొని ఎంతో సహకరించారు. వర్క్ షాప్స్ లో కూడా పాల్గొన్నారు. దాదాపు ఈ సినిమాలోని సన్నివేశాలన్నీ ముందుగానే రిహార్సల్స్ చేశారు. డైరెక్టర్ గారు కొత్త టెక్నిక్స్ తో వర్క్ షాప్స్ చేశారు. షూటింగ్ మొదలయ్యాక సెట్స్ లో సంపూ గారికి, డైరెక్టర్ గారికి మధ్య సింక్ చూసి ఆశ్చర్యమేసేది. వాళ్ళు వర్క్ షాప్స్ లో అంతలా ట్రైన్ అయ్యారు.

సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు: నేను హృదయ కాలేయం సినిమా చూసినప్పుడు స్క్రీన్ మీద ఉన్నది, నేను ఒక్కడేనా అనే ఫీలింగ్ కలిగింది. నరసింహాచారి అనే వ్యక్తి సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు కావడం, హృదయ కాలేయం సినిమా రావడం అప్పటికి నన్ను నేను నమ్మలేకపోయాను. ఇప్పుడు అలాంటి ఫీలింగ్ ఈ సినిమా చూస్తే కలిగింది. నేను ఎన్ని సినిమాలు చేసినా, పెద్ద పెద్ద డైలాగ్ లు చెప్పినా, డ్యాన్స్ లు చేసినా.. డైరెక్టర్ గారు వర్క్ షాప్ చేద్దామన్నారు. ఆమెకి మొదటి సినిమా కానీ నేను ఇప్పటికే సినిమాలు చేసి ఉన్నాను కదా.. వర్క్ షాప్ ఏంటి? సరే చూద్దాంలే అనుకున్నాను. కానీ నేను ఎప్పుడో నేర్చుకున్న నటనను మళ్ళీ గుర్తు చేశారు.

రీమేక్ సినిమా చేస్తున్నప్పుడు ఒరిజినల్ నటుడి ప్రభావం ఎంతో కొంత పడుతుంది. దానిని మీరు అధిగమించారు?
సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు: నేను ఆ నటుడుని ఫాలో అవ్వలేదు. మీరు నరసింహాచారిలా ఊరిలో ఎలా ఉంటారో అలా ఆఫీస్ కి రండి అని చెప్పారు. చెప్పులు కుట్టే సాధారణ వ్యక్తి ఎలా నడుస్తాడో అలాంటి నడక కావాలి అన్నారు. నేను ఎప్పుడో నేర్చుకున్న నటనను నిద్ర లేపింది ఈ పాత్ర. నేను ఆ పాత్ర అంత బాగా చేయడానికి కారణం డైరెక్టర్ గారే.

ఈ సినిమాలో మీరు కూడా ముఖ్య పాత్ర పోషించారు. ఆ ఆలోచన ఎవరిది?
వెంకటేష్ మహా: ఈ పాత్ర మీరు చేస్తే బాగుంటుందని మొదట పూజ గారు అన్నారు. అప్పటికి నేను అంటే సుందరానికీ వంటి కొన్ని సినిమాలు చేయడం ఆమె చూశారు. అలా ఆమె మీరు ఈ పాత్ర చేస్తే బాగుంటుంది అన్నారు. కానీ నాకు ఎవరైనా వేరే మంచి నటుడికి అవకాశం ఇస్తే బాగుంటుంది అనిపించింది. దానికోసం ఆడిషన్స్ కోసం చేశాం. ఎంతో ప్రతిభగల ఒక నటుడిని ఎంపిక చేశాం. అయితే మా సినిమా మొదలయ్యే సమయానికి ఆయన ఒక పెద్ద సినిమాలో పాత్ర కోసం డేట్లు ఇచ్చి ఉండటం రాలేకపోయారు. ఇంకో 10-15 రోజుల్లో షూటింగ్ కి వెళ్తాం అనగా.. నరేష్ గారు కూడా ఈ పాత్ర మీరు చేయాలని నాతో అన్నారు. ఆ నటుడి డేట్స్ కుదరకపోవడం వల్ల అలా నేను ఈ పాత్ర చేయాల్సి వచ్చింది.

ఈ సినిమాకి డైరెక్టర్ గా పూజ గారిని ఎంచుకోవడానికి కారణం?
వెంకటేష్ మహా: తెలుగుకి తగ్గట్టుగా రచన పరంగా నేను మార్పులు తీసుకొస్తాను కానీ.. కొత్త డైరెక్టర్ అయితే సినిమాకి కొత్తదనం వస్తుంది అనిపించింది. శశి గారితో అదే మాట చెప్పాను. నేను నిర్మాణ భాగస్వామిగా, రచయితగా వ్యవహరిస్తాను. డైరెక్టర్ ఎంపిక కోసం మాత్రం కాస్త సమయం కావాలని అన్నాను. అలా ఆయనతో ఫోన్ మాట్లాడి పెట్టేశాను. నా ఎదురుగా పూజ ఉన్నారు. నేను ఈ సినిమా డైరెక్ట్ చేస్తా అన్నారు. ఆమె అసోసియేట్ గా నా టీమ్ లో పని చేశారు. నేను అప్పుడు ఆమెని ఒక్కటే ప్రశ్న అడిగాను.. మీరే ఎందుకు డైరెక్ట్ చేయాలని?. నన్ను ఇండస్ట్రీలో చాలామంది నేను చెప్పాలనుకుంటున్న కథలు కాకుండా.. ఆ కథలు తీయి, ఈ కథలు తీయి అంటూ నా ఐడెంటిటీ లేకుండా చేస్తున్నారు. ఈ సినిమాలో హీరో పాత్రకి తన ఐడెంటిటీ తెలియదు. చివరికి తన ఐడెంటిటీ చాటుకుంటాడు. మీ అందరి కంటే కూడా ఆ పాత్రని నేనే బాగా అర్థం చేసుకోగలను అని చెప్పారు. ఆ తర్వాత నేను శశి గారితో మాట్లాడాను. మేము సుధ కొంగర, పుష్కర్ గాయత్రి వంటి వారితో పనిచేశాం.. మాకు ఎలాంటి సమస్య లేదు.. సంతోషమే అన్నారు. అలా పూజ డైరెక్టర్ అయ్యారు. ఈ సినిమా విషయంలో నేను తీసుకున్న నిర్ణయాలలో సంపూర్ణేష్ గారిని నటింపచేయాలి అనుకోవడం, పూజ గారిని డైరెక్టర్ గా తీసుకోవడం ఉత్తమమైనవి.

ఎన్నికల వేడి మొదలైన సమయంలో సినిమా విడుదలవుతుంది.. ముందుగానే ఇలా ప్లాన్ చేశారా?
వెంకటేష్ మహా: లేదండీ.. అలా కుదిరింది. ఫిబ్రవరికి ఈ సినిమా రెడీ అయింది. మే లోనే విడుదల చేయాలి అనుకున్నాం. కానీ ఆ సమయంలో చాలా సినిమాల విడుదల ఉండటంతో కుదరలేదు. ఇప్పటికి కుదిరింది. అదే సమయానికి ఎన్నికలు హడావుడి మొదలవ్వడం అనేది అనుకోకుండా జరిగింది.

ఈ సినిమా ప్రభావం మీ తదుపరి సినిమాల ఎంపికపై ఎలా ఉండబోతుంది?
సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు: ఇప్పటికైతే దాని గురించి ఏం ఆలోచించడంలేదు. ఇదొక కొత్త సినిమా. ప్రయోగం చేశారు. నన్ను కొత్తగా చూపించారు. ఇప్పటికే కొన్ని చోట్ల ప్రీమియర్లు వేయగా, ప్రేక్షకుల నుంచి మంచి స్పందన లభించింది. ఇండస్ట్రీకి చెందిన వారు కూడా చాలామంది నీకు సరైన సినిమా పడిందని అన్నారు. సినిమా విడుదల కోసం ఎంతగానో ఎదరుచూస్తున్నాను. ఈ సినిమా చేశాక మాత్రం సమాజం పట్ల నాకు మరింత బాధ్యత పెరిగింది అనిపించింది.

కామెడీ సినిమాలు చేయడం సులభంగా ఉందా? ఇలాంటి సినిమా చేయడం సులభంగా ఉందా?
సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు: ఇది నా మొదటి సినిమా లాగా చేశాను. కష్టమైనా, ఇష్టమైనా నటుడిగా అన్నీ చేయాలి. గత సినిమాలు నాకు కష్టం అనిపించలేదు. ఈ సినిమానే కష్టం అనిపించింది. ఎందుకంటే పాత్రలోకి ఇన్వాల్వ్ అయిపోయి ప్రపంచంతో సంబంధం లేకుండా కొద్ది నెలలు పాటు ఓ సన్యాసిలా బ్రతకాలి. ఒక ఖాళీ బాటిల్ లా ఉండాలి. దానిలో పాలు పోస్తే పాల బాటిల్, నీళ్ళు పోస్తే నీళ్ళ బాటిల్, పెట్రోల్ పోస్తే పెట్రోల్ బాటిల్ అవ్వాలి. అలా ఉండటం కోసం చాలా వర్క్ చేశాను.

సినిమా చూశాక ప్రేక్షకులు ఎవరిని కింగ్ లా భావిస్తారు?
వెంకటేష్ మహా: ప్రేక్షకులు తమని తాము కింగ్ లా ఫీలయ్యి థియేటర్ల నుంచి బయటకు వస్తారు. టీమ్ పరంగా చెప్తే మాత్రం.. సినిమాకి పని చేసిన ప్రతి ఒక్కరూ కింగే.

దర్శకుడిగా గ్యాప్ రావడానికి కారణం ఏంటి?
వెంకటేష్ మహా: రెండు మూడు కథలు రాసుకొని ఎందరికో చెప్పారు. చాలామందికి నచ్చాయి కానీ కార్యరూపం దాల్చలేదు. దానికి పలు కారణాలు ఉన్నాయి. ప్రధాన కారణం నేను అనుకున్న మూల కథను మార్చేలా మార్పులు చెప్పడం. అసలు మూల కథ మార్చేస్తే ఇంకేం ఉంటుంది. అందుకే నా మనసు ఒప్పలేదు. కాస్త ఆలస్యమైనా ప్రస్తుతం మర్మానువు అనే ఓ మంచి సినిమాని రూపొందిస్తున్నాను. ఒక జానర్ కి పరిమితం కాకుండా విభిన్న చిత్రాలు చేయాలనేది ఆ ఉద్దేశం. ఆ దిశగానే నా అడుగులు పడుతున్నాయి.

Martin Luther King will bring a sense of responsibility among general public: Venkatesh Maha and Sampoornesh Babu

YNOT Studios and Reliance Entertainment proudly present “MARTIN LUTHER KING” (Telugu), a Mahayana Motion Pictures Production. Directed by Puja Kolluru in her debut, the film is touted to be a political satire featuring Sampoornesh Babu in the lead role while VK Naresh and Sharanya Pradeep play key roles.

The film’s teaser, released on Gandhi Jayanthi day, elicited an overwhelmingly positive response for its unique blend of political satire and entertainment, making it a refreshing addition to Telugu cinema. The film also showcases Sampoornesh Babu in a captivating new role as an actor.

Starting on October 9, the cast and crew embarked on a tour of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, offering early premieres in cities like VISAKHAPATNAM, VIJAYAWADA, NELLORE, KURNOOL, and WARANGAL. The enthusiastic reception and reactions from these premieres have been truly remarkable.

As the film is scheduled to release on October 27, lead actor Sampoornesh Babu and screenwriter Venkatesh Maha interacted with web/print media journalists on Tuesday. Here are the excerpts from the interview.

Q) What are the reasons that made you say okay to a remake?
Sampoornesh Babu: Martin Luther King is made keeping the Telugu sensibilities in view. Initially, Venkatesh Maha garu called me up and asked me to watch the Tamil original Mandela. I politely said I don’t understand the Tamil language. He said not an issue and asked me to just observe the principal character in the film. Maha sir told me that I won’t be mouthing the monologues like I did in my earlier films. It’s a refreshing one.

How did the project come to you, Venkatesh Maha garu?
I was first asked by Sashi, the representative of YNOT Studios, to direct the movie. He told me that senior journalist Bharadwaj Ranjan suggested my name in Telugu to him. But I was busy with a handful of original scripts already when Sashi approached me. I had a reason why I made Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya. But for this flick, I openly admitted that I can’t do it. Later, when I watched Mandela, the original Tamil film, I felt it was something new. It should reach the people. Such stories should be made in all the languages, in all the nations in which democracy exists. That’s when Puja Kolluru came on board. YNOT Studios already had dealt with a number of female filmmakers. The biggest problem we had faced was to whom to cast. I was supposed to present a ppt to YNOT Studios explaining how the film should be made in Telugu incorporating Telugu nativity and cultural details into the adaptation. Suggestions kept pouring in as to who would be the best artiste to reprise the role of Yogi Babu. I had no clue, so I slept and woke up the next day. Sampoornesh Babu’s name came to my mind. Because I felt people could relate to him as a common man.

Sampoo has a different image on the Telugu silver screen because of his characters. Was it a challenge for you to cast him?
Venkatesh Maha: Actor Sampoornesh Babu has cooperated well with us. We had a 40-day workshop. I was busy overseeing the production logistics and funds for the movie. Director Puja had brought in new techniques during the acting workshop. It was like the actor’s eligibility was decided only after he passed the written test. This was a new methodology. I was surprised watching the sync between director Puja and Sampoo.

You portrayed a few out-of-box characters in your filmography so far. For the fisrt time you made an attempt to portray the feelings of a common man through Martin Luther King. How is the changeover?
Sampoornesh Babu: I am enjoying the changeover. It is an entirely different changeover. It was during Hrudaya Kaleyam, I experienced a feeling of whether I was the person who acted in such a role. I couldn’t believe myself when I watched myself portraying the character. And after many years, I experienced it again with Martin Luther King. When director Puja garu told me about the workshop, I was in fact surprised. Because I am an actor who has some good films under my belt. So I gave it a try when she asked for a workshop. It really changed my thinking.
Venkatesh Maha: The walking style took up a major portion of the session. Puja thought once Sampoo nails the style of walking, automatically the character of a cobbler kicks in.

Q) Does the character make any impact on you personally?
Sampoornesh Babu: I haven’t followed the character graph of Yogi Babu. I was told to be as myself — how Narasimha Chary would be in his native village. Not like Sampo. That was when I felt the difference. How a cobbler walks in a village. This character made me recall my past when I first learned the ropes of acting. Puja garu had complete command over the subject.

Q) It was a barber in the original version. It is changed into a cobbler in the Telugu remake. What was the reason for bringing changes in the script?
Venkatesh Maha: The traditional occupation of the cobbler community is the most oppressed community in the caste system as far as Telugu nativity is concerned. We changed the lead role into a cobbler not to discriminate against someone or some sect, but to reflect the realistic picture of the society.

What made you take a shot at acting? How were you onboard Martin Luther King?
Venkatesh Maha: Director Puja had first asked me to do the character. She knew that I acted in a couple of films – Ante Sundaraniki and others. However, we took auditions and looktests of a prominent actor. But the problem we had faced was he couldn’t give his dates because he had already given his word for some big films. About 10 days before starting the shoot, senior actor Naresh garu said I was the perfect fit for the character. The next day, they arranged the photoshoot and that’s how I landed into it.

What’s the reason behind turning down the offer of directing Martin Luther King?
Venkatesh Maha: First time when I watched Mandela, I felt I should have taken it up. I was confident that I could bring the same tone that director Madonne Ashwin had brought to Mandela. Then it would be a similar film to a Tamil flick. But we need a refreshing tone to the remake. I was sure that I would bring freshness to the writing. We needed someone who could present a technically and visually fresh film. I told Sashi that I would collaborate with you and produce it as well as provide a screenplay to it. When I put the phone down, Puja was right behind me and said she would direct it.

Now you were shown in a different backdrop, will Martin Luther King change your phase?
I have not thought about whether it would change my phase as an actor. But I can say, the film would connect with audiences. The early premiers have gotten a massive response. Many of my friends told me that I bagged a good film after many years. I am happy for that. After portraying the lead role of Martin Luther King, I felt as if my responsibility towards society was increased in me.

Has anyone lured you with money to sell your vote anytime in your real life?
Sampoo: It happens to everyone in this world. But I have not yielded to such tricks. I had never taken money and never sold my vote during elections. I cast my vote to a contestant whom I liked. I keep telling my mother and brother not to sell their votes. That is my nature.

Is it easy to do a spoof comedy or content-oriented characters like Martin Luther King?
All my earlier movies were so easy to act in. I didn’t face challenges as I faced in Martin Luther King. I was involved in the character, disconnecting with people for four months, I lived life like an ascetic.

Is this a deliberate attempt to release the movie during the election time?
Venkatesh Maha: No, we haven’t planned in that way. Even if you see my first film, I first started it early showing the film to people. Martin Luther King was ready in February. As part of the promotional plan, we resolved to first show the movie to people. So we thought if a public review is positive we could directly go for the release. Then, we planned to release it in May. Since too many films were jostling for the space, we held the film back. Now I feel that the universe has conspired with the films’ release so that it coincides with the elections.

Who is going to emerge as king? Is it you or the lead character played by Sampoornesh Babu?
I personally believe that every individual on the planet has the equal rights. After watching Martin Luther King, every one among the audiences feels himself to be a king while leaving theatres. Everyone who worked for Martin Luther King, is going to get credit equally. Everyone gave their 100 percent effort for the film, it would get reflected in every pixel of the film when you watch it on the screen.

After scoring massive hit with C/O Kancharapalem and Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya, were you bogged down with too much responsibility to deliver another hit at the Telugu box office?
Venkatesh Maha: No, there is no such pressure on me. And I don’t make similar stories over and over again. That’s why I came up with a new subject, Martin Luther King, of course it is a remake film.

You’re sending a message about casting a vote through this film. What social responsibility do you both have?
There are many I can’t name them now. Social responsibility on the whole, I can say, Martin Luther King reminds the lines written by the great poet Sri Sri garu. When I made people hear about the song in this film, they praised me saying these lines are from old films, how could I get them. That’s our plight now. వైనాట్ స్టూడియోస్, రిలయన్స్ ఎంటర్‌టైన్‌మెంట్ సగర్వంగా సమర్పిస్తున్న చిత్రం “మార్టిన్ లూథర్ కింగ్”. మహాయాన మోషన్ పిక్చర్స్ నిర్మించిన ఈ చిత్రానికి పూజ కొల్లూరు దర్శకత్వం వహించారు. ఈ సినిమాలో సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు, వి.కె. నరేష్, శరణ్య ప్రదీప్ వంటి ప్రతిభావంతులైన నటీనటులు నటించారు. ‘కేరాఫ్ కంచరపాలెం’, ‘ఉమామహేశ్వర ఉగ్రరూపస్య’ చిత్రాలతో దర్శకుడిగా విశేషంగా ఆకట్టుకున్న వెంకటేష్ మహా.. ఈ చిత్రానికి స్క్రీన్ ప్లే, డైలాగ్స్ అందించడంతో పాటు క్రియేటివ్ ప్రొడ్యూసర్ గా వ్యవహరించారు. అంతేకాదు ఈ సినిమాలో ఆయన ముఖ్యపాత్ర పోషించడం విశేషం. వినోద ప్రధానంగా రూపొందిన ఈ రాజకీయ వ్యంగ్య చిత్రం అక్టోబర్ 27న ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా థియేటర్లలో విడుదల కానుంది. ఈ నేపథ్యంలో శనివారం నాడు విలేకర్లతో ముచ్చటించిన దర్శకురాలు పూజ కొల్లూరు చిత్ర విశేషాలను పంచుకున్నారు.మీ కుటుంబ నేపథ్యం ఏంటి? సినీ పరిశ్రమలోకి ఎలా వచ్చారు?

నేను విజయవాడలో సత్యనారాయణపురంలో పెరిగిన ఒక మధ్యతరగతి జర్నలిస్ట్ కూతురుని. పదో తరగతి వరకు కేంద్రీయ విద్యాలయంలో చదివాను. నాకు ఇంటర్ లో అందరిలాగా ఎంపీసీ, బైపీసీ తీసుకోవాలని లేదు. సైన్స్ అంటే చాలా ఇష్టం. అలాగే ఐఏఎస్ అవ్వాలనే కల కూడా ఉండేది. ఏం చేయాలని ఆలోచిస్తున్న సమయంలో యునైటెడ్ వరల్డ్ కాలేజ్ ఆఫ్ మహేంద్ర గురించి తెలిసింది. రెండు మూడు వేల మంది అప్లై చేస్తే, నలుగురైదుగురుకి అక్కడ సీట్ వస్తుంది. అలా వచ్చిన వారిలో నేనూ ఒకదానిని. నాకు అక్కడ స్కాలర్ షిప్ కూడా వచ్చింది. అక్కడ నేను ఫిజిక్స్ చదివాను, ఎకనామిక్స్ చదివాను. ఇంగ్లీష్ లిటరేచర్ చేశాను. స్పానిష్ చదివాను. వీటితోపాటు ఆర్ట్స్ లో కూడా ఒకటి ఎంపిక చేసుకోవాలి. చిన్నప్పటి నుంచి సినిమాల మీద ఆసక్తి ఉన్నదానిగా ఫిల్మ్ స్టడీస్ తీసుకున్నాను. అక్కడ మాకు ఒకసారి ఓ స్పానిష్ ఫిల్మ్ చూపించారు. ఆ సినిమా స్పానిష్ సివిల్ వార్ గురించి ఉంటుంది. ఒక సినిమాతో ఎంతలా ప్రభావితం చేయొచ్చు అనేది ఆ సినిమా ద్వారా తెలిసింది. సైంటిస్ట్, ఐఏఎస్ అయ్యి చేసేదాని కంటే.. సినిమాతో ఎక్కువ ప్రభావితం చేయొచ్చు అనిపించింది. అప్పటి నుంచి ఇక పూర్తిగా సినిమానే అని నిర్ణయించుకున్నాను. సినిమాకి సంభందించి డిగ్రీ కోసం ఇక్కడ సరైన కాలేజ్ లేదు. అమెరికాలో మంచి కాలేజ్ లో స్కాలర్ షిప్ వచ్చింది. అలా అమెరికా వెళ్ళి నాలుగేళ్లు ఫిల్మ్ మేకింగ్ చదివాను. స్కాలర్ షిప్ తో కూడా చదువుకోవచ్చు అనేది తెలియజేయడం కోసం నేను ఇదంతా చెబుతున్నాను.సినిమా గురించి ఇంత నాలెడ్జ్ ఉన్న మీరు రీమేక్ ఎందుకు ఎంచుకున్నారు?
ఇది ఖచ్చితంగా చెప్పాల్సిన కథ. ఇలాంటివి వంద
రీమేక్ లైనా చేయొచ్చు. ఇలాంటి కథలు చాలా అరుదుగా వస్తాయి. అలాగే నేను కూడా ఎన్నో కథలు రాసుకున్నాను. కానీ ఎవరికైనా కథ చెప్తే, ఇది ఐదేళ్ళ తర్వాత చేయాల్సిన సినిమా అనేవాళ్ళు. అలా నేను ఎదురు చూస్తూ కూర్చోవడం కరెక్ట్ కాదు అనిపించింది. కొందరేమో రొమాంటిక్ కామెడీలు, ఫ్యామిలీ డ్రామాలు చేయొచ్చు కదా అనేవాళ్ళు. అవి తీయడంలో తప్పులేదు. కానీ విజయనిర్మల గారి తరహాలో విభిన్న చిత్రాలతో నా ప్రత్యేకతను చాటుకోవాలి అనుకున్నాను. పైగా ఈ కథ నాకు బాగా నచ్చింది. నేను ఎలాంటి కథ చెప్పాలి అనుకున్నానో అలాంటి కథ ఇది.వెంకటేష్ మహా గారి ప్రాజెక్ట్ లోకి మీరు వెళ్ళారా? లేక మీ ప్రాజెక్ట్ లోకి మహా గారు వచ్చారా?
వెంకటేష్ మహా గారి ప్రాజెక్ట్ లోకి నేను వెళ్ళాను. మహా గారు మర్మాణువు అనే సినిమా చేస్తున్నారు కదా. మిత్రుల ద్వారా నా గురించి తెలుసుకొని ఆ సినిమా కోసం నన్ను పిలిచారు. ఆ కథ విని నేను ఎంతో ప్రభావితం అయ్యాను. నేను ఎవరి దగ్గర పని చేయాలి అనుకోవడం లేదు, కానీ మీ దగ్గర పని చేయడానికి గర్వపడుతున్నాను. ఎందుకంటే ఆ కథ అంత బాగుంది అని చెప్పాను. ఆయన ఎంతో కష్టపడతారు. కేరాఫ్ కంచరపాలెం లాంటి గొప్ప సినిమాతో తానేంటో నిరూపించుకున్న ఆయన అంత కష్టపడుతుంటే.. నేనెంత కష్టపడాలి అని అనుకున్నాను. నేను మహా గారి దగ్గర పనిచేస్తున్న సమయంలో వైనాట్ స్టూడియోస్ వారు ఈ సినిమా కోసం ఆయనను సంప్రదించారు. మొదట రీమేక్ పై అంతగా ఆసక్తి చూపని మహా గారు.. సినిమా చూసిన తర్వాత ఇతర కమిట్ మెంట్స్ వల్ల డైరెక్ట్ చేయలేను కానీ, నిర్మాణ భాగస్వామిగా ఉంటా అన్నారు. మా టీంతో పాటు నేను కూడా ఆ సినిమా చూశాను. నా అంతట నేనుగా ఈ సినిమా చేస్తానని అడిగాను. ఈ కథలో ఎంతో లోతైన భావం ఉంది. అందుకే ఈ సినిమా చేయాలని అనిపించింది. మహా గారు వైనాట్ స్టూడియోస్ వారితో మాట్లాడి మీకు ఫిమేల్ డైరెక్టర్ ఓకేనా అని అడిగారు. సుధ కొంగర, పుష్కర్ గాయత్రి వంటి వారితో సినిమాలు చేశాము. మాకు అలాంటి భేదాలు లేవని చెప్పారు.

స్క్రీన్ ప్లే, డైలాగ్స్ మీకు రాయాలి అనిపించలేదా?
మహా గారికి స్క్రీన్ ప్లే, డైలాగ్స్ మీద మంచి పట్టుంది. ఆయన ప్రేక్షకుల నుంచి వచ్చిన దర్శకుడు. అందుకే ప్రేక్షకులకు మరింత చేరువ అయ్యేలా రాయగలరు.

నటీనటుల ఎంపిక ఎలా జరిగింది?
సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు గారిని తీసుకోవాలి అనేది మహా గారి ఎంపిక. ఈ పాత్రకు ఆయన వెయ్యి శాతం సరిపోయారు. ఆయన వస్తే ఒక మామూలు మనిషే తెరమీద కనిపిస్తాడు. ఈ పాత్ర ఆయన కోసమే పుట్టినట్టు ఉంటుంది. ఆయన గత చిత్రాలతో పోలిస్తే ఇందులో విభిన్నంగా కనిపిస్తారు. ఆయన సంపూర్ణేష్ బాబు కాకముందు నరసింహా చారి గా ఎలా ఉన్నారో అలాగే కనిపిస్తారు.

మహిళా దర్శకురాలిగా పరిశ్రమలో ఎలాంటి అనుభవాలు ఎదురయ్యాయి? నూతన మహిళా దర్శకులు వచ్చే వాతావరణం ఉందా?
ఏ పరిశ్రమలోనైనా సమస్యలు ఉంటాయి. మన పట్టుదలే మనల్ని ముందుకు నడిపిస్తుంది. మహిళలకు కొంచెం అవకాశాలు తక్కువగానే ఉంటాయి. కొందరు ఇవన్నీ ఎందుకు మీకు, రొమాంటిక్ కామెడీ సినిమాలు చేసుకోవచ్చు కదా అని అంటుంటారు. ఇలా కొన్ని సమస్యలు ఉంటాయి. మన పట్టుదలతో వాటిని దాటుకొని ముందుకు వెళ్ళాలి.

ప్రస్తుతం తెలుగు రాష్ట్రాల్లో ఎన్నికల వేడి ఉంది. తెలుగుకి తగ్గట్టుగా సినిమాలో ఎలాంటి మార్పులు చేశారు?
సినిమాలో ఎన్నో మార్పులు చేశాము. తమిళ రాజకీయాలను, అక్కడి సంస్కృతిని చూపించిన సినిమా మండేలా. తెలుగుకి తగ్గట్టుగా చాలా మార్పులు జరిగాయి. ప్రజలు ఎలా బ్రతుకుతున్నారో చూపించే ప్రయత్నం చేశాం. ఎవరినో నొప్పించడానికో, లేదా ఎవరికో ప్రయోజనం చేకూరేలాగానో ఈ సినిమా చేయలేదు. ప్రజల కోసం తీశాం. మహా గారు ఒక మాట అన్నారు. ఎన్నికల సమయంలో రాజకీయ నాయకుల గురించి సినిమాలు వస్తాయి. ప్రజల కోసం ఎలాంటి సినిమాలు రావు. కానీ ఎన్నికల్లో పాల్గొనే అతిపెద్ద నాయకుడు ప్రజలు. అందుకే ప్రజల కోసం, వారి ప్రాముఖ్యతను తెలపడం కోసం తీసిన సినిమా ఇది.

రీమేక్ అంటే పోలికలు వస్తాయి కదా.. సంపూర్ణేష్ విషయంలో అలాంటి పోలికలు రాకుండా ఎలాంటి జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకున్నారు?
నేను ఆ సినిమా చూస్తూ ఈ సినిమా తీయలేదు. ఆ సినిమా స్ఫూర్తితో మహా గారు స్క్రిప్ట్ రాశారు. ఒక దర్శకురాలిగా ఆ స్క్రిప్ట్ పరంగానే నేను సినిమా తీశాను. మాతృకతో పోలిస్తే చాలా కొత్తగా ఉంటుంది. షూట్ కి వెళ్ళడానికి ముందే ప్రతి చిన్న విషయంలోనూ ఎంతో హోం వర్క్ చేశాం.

ఇందులో వెంకటేష్ మహా గారు ఒక పాత్రలో నటించడానికి కారణం?
అది అనుకోకుండా జరిగింది. ముందుగా ఒక నటుడిని అనుకున్నాం. కానీ ఒక పెద్ద సినిమా కారణంగా ఆయన అందుబాటులో లేరు. చిత్రీకరణకు ఇంకో పదిరోజులు ఉంది అనగా, మహా గారు చేస్తే బాగుంటుంది అనుకున్నాం. పైగా ఆయనలో అద్భుతమైన నటుడు ఉన్నాడు.

ఈ సినిమాకి బలం ఏంటి?
ఐదేళ్ళ చిన్న పిల్లల నుంచి 80 ఏళ్ల పెద్దవారి వరకు వయసుతో సంబంధం లేకుండా అన్ని వర్గాల ప్రేక్షకులు మనస్ఫూర్తిగా చూసి నవ్వుకునే చిత్రమిది. ఇందులో వినోదంతో పాటు బలమైన సందేశం ఉంటుంది. ఓటు విలువని తెలియచేసేలా ఉంటుంది. ఓటరే కింగ్ అనేది ఈ సినిమా ద్వారా చూపించబోతున్నాం.

మార్టిన్ లూథర్ కింగ్ అనే టైటిల్ ఎవరి నిర్ణయం?
మహా గారు, నేను కలిసి తీసుకున్న నిర్ణయం ఇది. ఓటరునే కింగ్ గా చూపించాలి అనుకున్నాం. మార్టిన్ లూథర్ కింగ్ ఓటు కోసం ఎంతో పోరాటం చేశారు. అందుకే ఆయన పేరు ఈ సినిమాకి సరైన టైటిల్ అనిపించింది.

ఓటు విలువ గురించి ఇప్పటికే కొన్ని సినిమాలు వచ్చాయి. ఇందులో కొత్తగా ఏం చూపించబోతున్నారు?
ఇది ప్రజల కోణంలో ఉంటుంది. ఇప్పటిదాకా వచ్చిన సినిమాల్లో ఓటు మాకు వేయండి నాయకుల కోణంలో చూపించారు. కానీ ఇందులో అసలు మీకు ఓటు ఎందుకు వేయాలి అంటూ ప్రజల కోణంలో ఉంటుంది.

ఎడిటర్ గా కూడా మీరే చేయడానికి కారణం?
ముందుగా ఒకరు కొంచెం ఎడిట్ చేశారు. కానీ ఆ వర్క్ తో నేను సంతృప్తి చెందలేదు. ఫిల్మ్ మేకింగ్ లో భాగంగా నేను ఎడిటింగ్ కూడా నేర్చుకున్నాను. అందుకే నేనే ఎడిట్ చేశాను. దర్శకులకి ఎడిటింగ్ వచ్చి ఉండాలి అని నేను అనను. కానీ అన్ని విభాగాల మీద అవగాహన ఉండటం అవసరం.

సంగీతం గురించి?
స్మరణ సాయి అద్భుతమైన సంగీత అందించారు. ఐదు పాటలు చక్కగా కుదిరాయి. అయితే పాటలన్నీ కథలో భాగంగానే ఉంటాయి.

చిన్న వయసులోనే మిమ్మల్ని నమ్మి ఇంత బాధ్యత ఎలా అప్పగించారు?
నా ప్రతిభను చూసి ఇచ్చారు. కాలేజ్ సమయంలో నేను తీసిన చిత్రం అంతర్జాతీయ స్థాయిలో అవార్డులు పొందాయి. అలాగే అమెజాన్ ఫారెస్ట్ లో నేను తీసిన డాక్యుమెంటరీ కూడా ఎన్నో ప్రశంసలు, పురస్కారాలు అందుకుంది. నేను ఈ సినిమాతో తెలుగు పరిశ్రమకి దర్శకురాలిగా పరిచయం అవుతున్నాను కానీ, నాకు దర్శకత్వం కొత్తకాదు.

Martin Luther King will be a laugh riot with an underlying message in it: Director Puja Kolluru

YNOT Studios and Reliance Entertainment proudly present ‘MARTIN LUTHER KING’ (Telugu) which is hitting screens on October 27. Produced by Mahayana Motion Pictures, the film is directed by Puja Kolluru. It features Sampoornesh Babu in the lead role while senior artistes VK Naresh and Sharanya Pradeep play key roles.

The film’s teaser, released on Gandhi Jayanthi day, elicited an overwhelmingly positive response for its unique blend of political satire and entertainment, making it a refreshing addition to Telugu cinema. The film also showcases Sampoornesh Babu in a captivating new role as an actor.

As part of the promotions, director Puja Kolluru interacted with the media on Saturday. Here are the excerpts of the interview.

Can you please give a brief introduction about yourself?
I am a daughter of a Journalist who grew up in Vijayawada’s Satyanarayanapuram. After studying up to 10th Class in Kendriya Vidyalaya, I was thinking about what to opt for because I was not a science student. There was no course that could cover both science and arts. After one year, I came to know about United World College of Mahindra. South African anti-apartheid activist and politician was honorary president of the institute. Education has been like movea ment for them for the last 50 years. The institute runs with this objective irrespective of caste, religion and region. It is located in Pune. When I applied, I was fortunate to get selected from 2,000 applicants. I was offered a Rs 25 lakhs scholarship. I was fortunate to study Physics, Economics, English literature, Spanish and one art subject — Film Studies.
During that time, I was so much influenced by filmmaker Guillermo del Toro who directed Pan’s Labyrinth. He also directed The Shape of Water which was awarded The Oscars. So Pan’s Labyrinth is a Spanish film that tells the Spanish Civil War from the perspective of a 10-year-old girl. I grew up watching Aakali Rajyam with my father and another late legendary director Viswanath’s iconic films. Later, the storytelling and the way stories are being churned out are quite different.

Later to study my graduation, I applied to 4 universities in the USA. Although I secured a seat in all of them, Ringling College of Art and Design came forward offering me a scholarship of Rs 1.7 crore. I studied for four years, I had an amazing faculty who worked for some big Hollywood films. The team, who worked with ‘American Beauty’, taught me that was when I first learned about colours used in cinema. Later, I worked with Hollywood independent filmmakers. Hollywood studios work just like a corporate setup. But after coming to Tollywood, the atmosphere here is quite different. I worked with Swapna Dutt during the time of ‘Mahanati’.

Having studied filmmaking in the USA, what made you choose a remake for the debut?
I’ve to tell a story. It doesn’t matter whether it is a biopic or a remake. When I approached producers, they simply said it is a story that should be made after 5 years. I had already wasted a precious time of three years. When I got the offer, I felt it was the right script that I was looking for. I have many scripts with me. The themes like international integration. But Tollywood’s functioning was different here. And the OTT too is a proxy to the cinema. They go by assumptions and statistics of what the audience actually wants. It was a culture shock for me watching all these here. So, usually, the stories I write can relate to Vijaywada and the USA. By looking at my appearance, people in the industry asked me to come with family dramas and romantic entertainers which are not my cup of tea.

Is it you who joined with Venkatesh Maha or did he join hands with you?
It was I who first collaborated with Venkatesh Maha garu. During the making of Marmanu, the crowd-funding film, I happened to hear the script and I was so thrilled. YNOT Studios Sashi approached Maha garu with a script for Mandela. They want to remake it. Maha politely turned down the offer as he has so many scripts in the pipeline. That’s when I asked Maha garu if I am interested in taking up the project. The story may look like a political satire, but there is a personal angle and a discrimination angle to it. I grew up in a society where I had to face discrimination as a young girl. So I told him that I can bring the depth into the story with all my personal experiences. I feel so proud to work with Maha garu.

Vijayawada is an epicentre of political activity. When you make a political satire, how your experiences with the society helped you in the script?
Society is not so ideal as we’re taught in civics textbooks. You never find an ideal democratic nation in our society. Growing in Vijayawada, the socio-segregations that I have seen there, have all been included in the film. Maha garu has so much strength in writing screenplay and dialogues. Because he came from the people, he observed so closely. So if I wrote them, it would have been quite different.

Is it your choice to cast a comedian like Sampoornesh Babu as the lead protagonist in the film?
No, it was Maha garu’s call. We had cast options of 64 artistes. Usually if we sit and discuss, we come to a conclusion about who would be the best cast for the principal character. It took 20 days to zero in on Sampoo. If it was other than Sampoo, only that actor is visible. But someone like a simple man, a common man like Sampoornesh Babu appears on the screen, it appears as though you brought a common man on the stage. That’s his identity. Sampoornesh Babu garu is born for this role.

How welcoming is Tollywood for a female director like you?
It is very welcoming. If a woman filmmaker is coming to the industry, she has nothing to do with what the industry thinks about her. How determined she is is important. There were problems in Hollywood too. Sexism has changed a lot in the film industry after the emergence of social media. There are two different generations.

The two Telugu States are undergoing a politically charged atmosphere due to elections. To what extent did you try to present the present political situation in Martin Luther King?
Mandela, the original Tamil flick reflects Tamil politics. Here, it is entirely different. Be it the pop culture references or from the cinema, we tried to show how people are leading their lives. Without political essence, the film can’t be a satirical one. We haven’t made the film to appease someone or mock somebody. If there is anything bias in the film it would be the bias that we have for the people, for the common man.

So many comparisons keep coming in your mind when you deal with a remake.
I have not directed Martin Luther King by watching the original. I have not kept Mandela as the parameter. Maha garu wrote the script adapting the story of Tamil original. As a director, I made the film going by the script. It’s a completely different story. It has one year of our hard work into it. You will see a different film. We have changed the socio-political aspect — rather than taking the references of the original film, we took the lower castes which are being suppressed which are facing discrimination. The cobbler caste. That we have incorporated in the movie.

What made you cast Venkatesh Maha as the actor in the film?
We have first approached a big artiste. Unfortunately, he got busy with so many projects. That’s when we roped in Mahi.

What are the major highlights of the film?
It’s a complete fun and comedy entertainer. From a five-year-old girl dancing to folk music to the 80-year-old economic professor — everyone would enjoy this laugh riot. This satire is not just for laughs. It will be embedded in the story. That is the highlight in terms of entertainment point of view. In terms of vote point of view, how important a vote is in a democracy already exists in the story. But we amped up very much. The King, the voter is the king you see the tagline, that is the punchline of the story. Martin Luther King had fought for civil rights — especially against the discrimination of vote. I grew up listening to the name Martin Luther King. That’s how I got connected with the name.

You didn’t take the original music composer for the film. Why so?
Music changes everything, as I said we didn’t want to make a remake, we want to make a film adaptation. One of the key elements is music. Smaran Sai is a young blood. He is not recognised much although after he did RX100. I loved Smaran Sai’s work ethics. There are 5 songs in the film, you will never know whether they exist in the film. They just go with the flow. Rehman gave the lyrics.
